Overtime handling

Choose how time worked beyond the scheduled shift is paid — pay a premium, pay straight time with no premium, or cap paid hours at the scheduled shift.

Payroll AdminAdminTenant ConfigurableLive

Not every business pays overtime, and not every business pays it the same way. Overtime handling is a single tenant-wide setting that decides what happens to time worked beyond an employee's scheduled shift.

Set it under Payroll → Settings → Overtime → Overtime handling.

Who can change this

Only Payroll Admin and Tenant Owner / Admin can change overtime handling. It applies to the whole organization.

The three modes

ModeWhat it doesHourly staffMonthly (salaried) staff
Pay overtime premium (default)Approved overtime is paid using the multipliers below (weekday, Saturday, Sunday, public holiday). The premium is added on top of the flat hours already paid (so an OT hour reaches the full multiple, never more).Premium added on top of the fixed salary.
Straight time — no premiumNo overtime premium is paid, and the overtime line is hidden on payslips.Hours are still paid, but at the flat rate (no extra).Salary is unchanged.
No overtime — cap at shiftNo premium and paid hours are capped at the scheduled shift.Only the scheduled hours are paid; time worked past shift end is not paid.Salary is unchanged.

Example — a 'no overtime' company

A company that does not do overtime sets Straight time — no premium. An hourly employee who works extra is still paid for the hours they worked, but with no 1.5× premium, and no overtime line appears on the payslip.

Long days and time off in lieu (TOIL)

A common field-work pattern is a very long day followed by a day off to balance the period (for example, 17 hours one day, then the next day off).

  • Monthly (salaried) staff: pay is the fixed salary, so a long day and a lieu day off balance automatically. Record the real hours on the long day, and mark the next day as an approved day off so it is not counted as an unpaid absence.
  • Hourly staff: under Straight time, the long day is paid flat and the lieu day is unpaid. A built-in lieu-hours bank that carries the surplus onto a paid lieu day is a planned enhancement.

Never enter a fabricated shift

Do not record a fake "8-hour shift" for a day someone did not work, or a fake shift for a long day. Record the real hours and mark rest / lieu days as approved days off. Fabricated attendance breaks the audit trail.

Notes

  • The default is Pay overtime premium, so existing organizations are unchanged unless an admin selects another mode.
  • The overtime multipliers (weekday / Saturday / Sunday / public holiday) only apply in Pay overtime premium mode.
  • This setting is organization-wide. Per-shift overtime rules (for example, office staff capped at shift while field staff bank long days) are a planned enhancement.
